National Museum of Africa Art will be there to help provide an opportunity for mask making and their meanings - in conjunction with Artful Animals opening July 1, 2009.

El Alacran (The Scorpion)
El Alacran, meaning The Scorpion, is about carnival in Havana in general, and particularly the comparsar--a Cuban music and dance style with roots in the Congo--that was founded in 1908 and dedicated to Yemaya, Yoruba Goddess of the Seas. The legendary El Alacran comparsa hails from the Cerro barrio (neighborhood) in Havana, and its name is rooted the folktale The Scorpion. Moderated by camerman and co-producer of the film Gilberto Martinez Gomez. Spanish with English subtitles ( 2000, 19 minutes)
Presented in conjunction with upcoming exhibit Artful Animals.
