António Ole began his professional career by creating documentaries and working in television during the period when Angola transitioned from colonialism to independence. This series of six portraits dates to the early 1970s, when the artist traveled the country to document changes occurring in his homeland. One afternoon he ate lunch with the gentleman who wears a suit coat and hat. He also photographed his wife wearing a bandana. Soon a neighbor, whose eyeglass lenses were broken, asked to have his portrait taken as well. Ole's images of these individuals capture their intensity, dignity and pathos. These intimate yet anonymous portraits reveal the artist's ongoing fascination with, and depiction of, the human condition.
