Pilipili Mulongoy earned his living as a house painter in Lubumbashi before enrolling in the atelier of Pierre-Romain Desfossés, a Belgian painter and patron. Desfossés' studio later became the Académie des beaux arts. He encouraged aspiring artists to paint highly decorative scenes of nature. Pilipili was one of the first to enroll in this school and soon became a leader among the students. Mulongoy collaborated with Ilunga on Pintades.
