Screening and Discussion of John Henrik Clarke: A Great and Mighty Walk

Join the National Museum of African Art for a screening of John Henrik Clarke: A Great and Mighty Walk (dir. St. Clair Bourne, 1996, USA, 90 min., English). Chronicling the life of the noted African American historian and Pan-Africanism activist, this documentary also takes a provocative look at history and culture through an Africa-centered viewpoint. A discussion featuring historian C. R. Gibbs and moderated by the African Diaspora Ancestral Commemoration Institute’s (ADACI) education specialist Tendai Paula Johnson will follow. Then, enjoy poetry from ADACI member Aza Zhenga and a special musical presentation from Nana Malaya Oparabea. A docent-led tour of the museum’s exhibition Currents: Water in African Art will round out the afternoon.

Part of a regular Heritage Talk series, this screening and discussion will allow the museum to hear directly from one of its most important audiences: D.C.’s local African diaspora community. Make your voice heard!
