John Trengrove, 2017, France, 88 min., English), presented as a part of its ongoing Africa in Reel Time series and in conjunction with the exhibition Jim Chuchu’s Invocations. The Wound tells the story of lonely, closeted factory worker Xolani and the adolescent Kwanda. As Xolani guides Kwanda through the Xhosa ritual ukwaluka, together they navigate masculinity, homosexuality, and identity. Premiered at Sundance in January but not set for public release in the United States until August, don’t miss the chance to see this complicated love story and painful coming of age narrative first. A discussion of the film follows.
