Celebrate the extraordinary elephant at the National Museum of African Art! World Elephant Day is a global movement to support the conservation of these incredible creatures. Elephants and their ivories have inspired stories and art in many African cultures, and the museum wants to assist in raising awareness about the largest land animal on earth! The World Wildlife Fund lists this species as “vulnerable,” or at a high risk of endangerment in the wild. The African elephant is the largest animal walking the Earth, with herds wandering 37 countries in Africa. Discover how elephants have inspired Africa’s artists!
