Peoples (Artist/ Maker) contains: Artworks in the NMAfA collection are created either by known artists or by unknown individuals working with one of Africa's 3,000 artistic traditions. The majority of known individuals in the collection are modern and contemporary artists; some tradition-based objects, however, are created by known and celebrated individuals.

In other cases, artworks are made and / or used by more than one group of people and ideas are borrowed and/or modified by neighboring peoples. When the specific makers of an object cannot be firmly identified, they are referred to as Undetermined peoples, pending on-going research. We welcome comments from scholars and collectors in expanding our knowledge of African art.
