Knowledgeable onlookers would have recognized this ring as an Islamic amulet that takes the form of a numerically significant magic square, two-dimensional devices whose letters and numbers cure, protect, and bring overall well-being to the wearer. The highly stylized writing cites holy verses and invokes the name of God.

Silver finger ring embellished with a square decorative element inscribed with sixteen areas of Arabic numeric inscriptions. Arabic text is also inscribed along the border of the checkerboard design area.

Ivo Grammet, collected Gouliminne, southwestern, Morocco, ca. 1978 to 2003
