Gora Mbengue

Date: 1931 - 1988, born Senegal
Gora M'Bengue was born to a family of farmers in 1931 and died in 1988 as one of the best known reverse glass painters. He was Wolof, a Tijaan Moslem and from the geer caste. He began his practice in 1954, eventually settling on Gorée Island to practice until his death. He never traced the designs or models onto his compositions but rather began painting directly onto the glass, in reverse; a technique and skill, which makes his work unique. He exhibited several times internationally in France and the United States and was well known in his native Senegal.
