As a part of the Africa in Reel Time series, join the National Museum of African Art for a screening of Maami (dir. Tunde Kelani, 2011, Nigeria, 93 min., Yoruba with English subtitles). Based on the Nigerian novel of the same name, Maami unfolds over two days leading up to the 2010 World Cup as professional soccer player Kashimawo (Wole Ojo) thinks back on his painful childhood. In particular, he remembers his brave and kind-hearted single mother (Funke Akindele) who worked to protect him from the dark secrets of his absent father. This thoughtful and lovable film, told through flashbacks examining the influence of our parents and our memories on the person we become, is shown in conjunction with the exhibition Senses of Time.
Maami is presented as part of the museum’s African in Reel Time series. Join us every month for a screening and discussion! Visit here for a full list of upcoming films.
