NMAfA’s Seventh Annual Community Day, Aug. 9

The National Museum of African Art’s annual Community Day is Saturday, Aug. 9, from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. This year the museum celebrates its 50th anniversary and the “Connecting the Gems of the Indian Ocean: From Oman to East Africa Project.” Each summer, the museum opens its doors so visitors of all ages may experience special performances and events intended to inspire them to learn more about the people and cultures of Africa and its diaspora through music, dance, film and art.
Emceed by Victorious Hall and Alfred Duncan with guest host Jordan, Community Day offers something for everyone including art activities, henna and face painting, mural painting and dance performances. This event is free.

The National Museum of African Art is the nation’s premier museum dedicated exclusively to the collection, conservation, study and exhibition of Africa’s traditional and contemporary arts. The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (closed Dec. 25). Admission is free. The museum is located at 950 Independence Ave. S.W., near the Smithsonian Metrorail station on the Blue and Orange lines.
