In this documentary, Germaine Acogny, a leading figure in contemporary African dance, invites 35 choreographers and musicians of African origin to the École des Sables in Senegal for an inaugural dance project. Something Necessary follows Anne as she struggles to rebuild her life and her farm after the civil unrest that swept Kenya during its 2008 elections. Joseph, a young gang member who participated in the violence, is drawn to Anne and her farm, seemingly in search of redemption. Both he and Anne need something only the other can give in order to shed the painful memories of their past and move on—but will either of them find it?
