SUN OF THE SOIL: THE STORY OF MANSA MUSA

Sun of the Soil: The Story of Mansa Musa

August 26, 2021
4–6 p.m.
Screening followed by Q&A

Sun of the Soil: The Story of Mansa Musa documents Malian artist Abdou Ouologuem’s immersion into the historical legend of the 14th-century emperor Mansa Musa. The screening, which is geared toward middle and high school students, is a wonderful introduction to the story of Mansa Musa, the art of filmmaking, and how the power of film helps us understand the past. Writer/producer Ladan Osman and director Joe Penney join museum educator Pier Penic for a discussion after the film’s screening.

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Caravans of Gold, Fragments in Time: Art, Culture, and Exchange Across Medieval Saharan Africa.

Supported by the Lilly Endowment.
