Welcome to the Ideal Studio Photo Gallery! The photographs on this website are from the Chief Solomon Osagie Alonge collection in the Eliot Elisofon Photographic Archives, National Museum of African Art. During the 1940s – 1970s, Chief S.O. Alonge owned and operated The Ideal Photo Studio, a portrait studio in Benin City, Nigeria. The collection consists of hundreds of portraits of residents and documentary photographs that record the social history of Benin City.
The Elisofon Archives is involved in an ongoing research project to identify portraits, locations, dates and social events in the Alonge collection. To do that we invite the participation of family, friends and community members to identify individuals and share your stories and memories about the people and events portrayed in the Alonge photographs.
