Photography is difficult because everything has to occur faster than you can blink ... it's micro-time. Video is more like a human or lived time frame.
—Roger Ballen
Roger Ballen's video collaboration in 2012 with the South African rap-rave group Die Antwoord for the song "I Fink U Freeky" has taken him in new directions. In the award-winning music video, his graffiti-like drawings and sculptural installations are animated visually and aurally. The complex scene he constructed deftly merges the music and words of Die Antwoord to produce a visceral work that heightens the group's raw energy and driving beats.
Die Antwoord (Afrikaans for "The Answer") formed in 2008. Its vocalists are Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er. The artists' musical and visual style incorporates elements from the Zef counterculture movement, which is described as modern, trashy, and appropriating out-of-date, discarded cultural elements.
