On Taking the Pill

As a teenager António Ole was keenly interested in comic strips and pop art. He created this piece at the age of 17 by working on his bed and using a large piece of cardboard as a drafting surface because he did not yet have a studio. Despite his youth and lack of formal training, Ole was already recognized nationally as a significant artistic talent. This piece took first prize at Luanda's Modern Art Salon in 1970. Its three-color palette, flat surface and sure lines are characteristic of Ole's work at this time, yet it sharply contrasts with the textural, organic feel of N/S or the scale of the installation On the Margins of the Borderlands. Together, these works demonstrate the impressive breadth of Ole's artistic skill.
