Willie Bester studied part time at the Community Art Project in Cape Town. In 1991 he devoted himself full time to his art. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the world. Bester lives and works in Johannesburg.

Once imprisoned under apartheid for loitering, Bester memorializes the history of harassment and oppression in the black settlements with The Notorious Green Car and its mesh window screen that recalls police vehicles.
