SLAVE CARAVAN

The slave caravan depicts a significant commercial activity that was common on the Kongo coast from the 1600s to the late 1800s. The African overseer driving the group forward with his whip would have been one of several individuals hired by an African trader to deliver slaves to the coast, where they were sold to Europeans.
