Rachid Koraïchi,
b. Algeria, 1947.

Koraïchi studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Algeria before attending the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The descendant of an ancient Sufi family in the region, Koraïchi grew up surrounded by the contemplation and reverence to the word, mysticism, writing, numerology and inscription. He works in many media, including ceramics, textiles, installation, metallurgy, paint and printmaking. In many of his projects, Koraïchi enjoys collaborating with local artisans whose works allow the artist to place a contemporary slant upon ancient, sometimes forgotten, artistic practices within the Mediterranean region. His aesthetics are informed not simply by his profound connections to his Sufi North African heritage, but also by his broad experiences within the contemporary art world and the political alliances he has made with Middle Eastern and North African artists and intellectuals engaged with political struggles.
