3SAI: A Rite of Passage documents new recruits having their heads shaved at the Third South African Infantry Battalion (3-SAI) in Kimberley, one of two South African military bases that still perform the ritual. Part of Paul Emmanuel's Transitions project, the film has enjoyed wide international acclaim. Selected as the winning short film of the 4th Africa-in-Motion International Film Festival in Edinburgh, UK (2009), it also was officially screened at the 12th Antimatter International Film Festival in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada (2009), Design Indaba Expo National Film Festival in Cape Town, South Africa (2009) and the 39th International Film Festival Rotterdam, The Netherlands (2010).
