Mask
Wood, pigment
Private collection (cat. 6)
This mask was probably performed in water spirit dances. In the center of its forehead is a small gourd, ukokorogho, meant to hold medicine that would enhance contact with the water spirits. Its superstructure contains unusual horns, turned outwards, as well as the image of a pygmie kingfisher, called asa, a messenger to the realm of the spirits.
