Celebrate the harvest festival known as Kwanzaa and new beginnings at African Art! Explore the festival’s history and themes through art, interactive workshops, and performance. Design a beautiful altar honoring the holiday and enjoy a spirited dance performance by the KanKouran West African Dance Company!

11 a.m. Welcome by Baba Shonga and Son
11:10 a.m. Learn about the Kwanzaa altar
11:30 a.m. Origins of Kwanzaa and the 7 principles and a libation demonstration by Nana Malaya Rucker
11:45 a.m. 7 Letters of Kwanzaa Poetry Interactive for ages 6–12
12:10 p.m. Create a Kinara (family workshop) Activity instructions and stencil available below.
12:25 p.m. Performance by the Kankouran West Africa Dance Company
Workshop
Create a Kinara
Supplies: scissors, construction paper, glue, colored pencils, felt tips, crayons, or paint

Instructions

Print out the stencil and follow the color-coded direction provided to complete the stencil, or
cut out the stencil and candles. If you choose option b, place the kinara stand on card stock or construction paper and cut out. The preferred color for the kinara is brown.
- Decorate the kinara with a design of your choosing.
- The candles are red (3), black (1), and green (3). Cut the candles out of colored card stock or color the candles with the appropriate colors.
- Glue the candles to the kinara stand and let dry.
- Once dry, leave the craft as is or glue the kinara with candles onto sturdy foamboard or larger cardstock to frame.
- Discuss the seven principles of Kwanza shared earlier in the program.
