Fruits of Exile

Although the experience of exile may bring a sense of loss and nostalgia, it can also provide a certain level of freedom as one sees every place as foreign. Individuals are released from the constraints of tradition, often able to gain a greater sense of self and artistic vision with knowledge of multiple cultures, histories and realities. Modern history has been, to a large extent, shaped by the works of those who have obtained a clarity and maturity of vision that comes with the experiences of exile. The artistic pursuits of individuals as diverse in their media and contexts as Wosene Worke Kosrof, Mickaël Bethe-Selassié, Skunder Boghossian or Achamyeleh Debela demonstrate the fruits of exile.
