Dive deep into the wonderful world of printmaking, and try it for yourself under the guidance of an internationally recognized artist! Taught by Nigerian artist Tunde Odunlade, this full-day workshop will begin with a demonstration from Odunlade of the limited edition variable (LEV) linocut printmaking process. Then, enjoy lunch on your own before returning to the art center to make a unique work of art for yourself, cut and printed from linoleum.
Odunlade is a master printmaker and batik artist, as well as a musician, poet, actor, and experienced teacher. He also works in fiber, textile, and the graphic arts. His art uses both contemporary and traditional techniques, drawing on the rich history of Yoruba art and culture alongside modern-day life in Nigeria. Odunlade’s art work is included in the collections of institutions like the State House in Lagos, Nigeria, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, as well as our own National Museum of African Art. Don’t miss this truly one-of-kind chance to learn printmaking directly from a master!
This event will be hosted offsite at the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, located at 4318 Gallatin Street, Hyattsville, MD 20781. Via Metro, take the Green line toward Greenbelt to the West Hyattsville Station. Then, go to Bus Bay E to catch the F8 bus toward Cheverly Station to the Baltimore Avenue and Gallatin Street stop. If you are driving, there are parking lots behind and to the left of the building available and free on the weekends and a public pay lot across Baltimore Ave/Route 1. Non-permit residential street parking is available on Hamilton Street and two-hour parking on Gallatin Street. Meters on nearby streets apply from 8 a.m.–8 p.m.
This workshop is presented as one of three special editions of the museum’s Workshop Wednesdays. (Click here to see the full listing of drop-in Workshop Wednesdays.) These masterclasses will offer the special chance to explore select artistic topics more deeply and learn from the same artists whose work you see on our walls and in our incredible collections. Check back for the release of the full calendar of masterclasses.
