Join us for a talk with artist Victor Ekpuk as he discusses his artistic practice and current research at the National Museum of African Art and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Ekpuk, a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow, has been looking into objects and archival documents related to the trans-Atlantic slave trade from the 17th to the 19th centuries. This research is intended to inform new works in his Slave Narrative series, an ongoing body of work inspired by the history of slavery.
Ekpuk, a Nigerian-American artist based in Washington, DC, is renowned for glyph-like paintings and drawings that are inspired by the aesthetic concepts of indigenous African writing systems and graphic symbols from diverse cultures.
