Celebrate 60 years of African Art with the Sounds of Africa concert series featuring the music of the African diaspora!
This ongoing series, which will run through November 16, brings together a stellar lineup of artists who are pushing the boundaries of music from Africa while honoring its roots.

August 24, 7-10pm: Tewodros “Teddy” Aklilu Band featuring Munit Mesfin–Ethiopian pianist and keyboardist Tewodros “Teddy” Aklilu has performed with a number of well-known bands, including the acclaimed D.C. group Admas. Aklilu continues to explore diverse musical styles, including EthioJazz.
September 28, 4-7pm (part of Community Day): Artist Collective features talented musicians and vocalists in the DMV community from across Africa and its diaspora. The concert, a highlight of Community Day, will pay homage to the rich legacy of African musical genres and artists with an eclectic mix of classic and contemporary tunes brought to life by renowned artists like Wayna, Armand Ntep, Massama Dogo, and more, in an unforgettable evening of music and celebration.
October 26, 7-10pm: Crank Lukongo and Dior Ashley Brown and the Filthy Animals — Afrobeat meets Go-Go rhythms with Crank Lukongo and Dior Ashley Brown! Crank Lukongo combines the rhythmic foundation of D.C.’s Go-Go music with elements of soul, jazz, reggae, blues, rock, Afrobeat, folk, and hip-hop. Dior Ashley Brown has been dubbed the “Hip-Hop Polymath” by The Washington Post.
November 16, 7-10pm: Dokun Afrotonics Afrobeat Band featuring Wunmi–This band offers a vibrant blend of Afrobeat infused with Brazilian styles and Afro-Cuban rhythms. Wunmi brings her R&B, soul, funk, and Afrobeat expertise to the stage.
